Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of
Sudan's army, survived a drone strike in July 2024 while visiting a military
graduation in Jebeit, eastern Sudan.
The conflict between Hemeti, the deputy chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, and Burhan, the council's chairman, concerns the struggle for control in Sudan after the October 25, 2021, military takeover. Each of them aimed to increase their control over the transitional period that had started in 2019 with the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir's government. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were implicated because of their history of using drones against military goals. Before this, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces , made a promise to kill al-Burhan and other army leaders
