Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated in Israeli airstrikes in the
southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday, September 27, and Israeli media revealed
that he was the target of these strikes.
One story - according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv - says that
an unknown man met Nasrallah and when he shook hands with him, he smeared his
hands with an unknown substance to help Israel track the location of the party
leader. According to the newspaper, it took Israel only two minutes to locate
Nasrallah. Minutes later, Israeli aircraft launched airstrikes on the
headquarters, dropping an estimated 80 tons of bombs on the site, killing
Nasrallah and senior party leaders. Maariv's report indicated that Nasrallah died
of suffocation after hiding in an unventilated room in the headquarters, where
toxic gases from the bombing leaked out.
He is the third
Secretary-General of Hezbollah, and assumed this position on February 16, 1992,
after the assassination of Sayyid Abbas al-Moussawi by Israel.
